I also couldn’t think of how to really write the scenario until Meg’s prompt. It felt to me that it would do more to strengthen their relationship that way. She’s late enough that it gives Jyn a few very bad days, but it’s just a delay-she’s fine, Jyn’s fine, and Jyn has to patch things up with her if it’s going to happen at all, and Cassia has to face the parts of her own behaviour that unsettled Jyn so much in the first place. Of course, this would be followed by Cassia taking/running away on a dangerous solo mission, but as I was thinking over it, I had the idea that it’d be interesting if nothing went seriously wrong on the mission. So I always imagined them with this brief period of painful mutual pining with bonus guilt. I don’t really headcanon Jyn and Cassian breaking up post-Scarif (even temporarily), but for some reason it always stuck in my head that Jyn would push Cassia away at some point (partly cold feet, partly genuine frustration with her evasiveness), and Cassia (naturally hurt, and proud) would respond with the everything :) is just :) :) fine :) :) :) :) persona that she usually pulls on for Imperial officers.
